Cellulose is mostly made from recycled newsprint, cardboard, paperboard and other waste paper products treated with chemical to obtain fire-resistant and insect-resistant properties. As Insulation
Cellulose insulation forms a seamless blanket of natural fibers that provide outstanding protection against extreme heat and cold. On the hottest and coldest days, cellulose won't lose its effective R-value. Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, a multiprogram science and technology laboratory managed for the U.S. Department of Energy, found that capping loose-fill fiberglass insulation with blown-in cellulose adds R-value, and restores the effective R-value that fiberglass insulation loses during cold weather.
Note that cellulose is effective in dry area applications only. It can absorb more moisture than most other types of insulation. If the wall cavities are not perfectly dry then cellulose may favor mildew growth. The use of cellulose normally requires dry walls and attics.
As an Air Barrier
Cellulose blocks air leakage through cracks, voids and gaps efficiently, only surpassed by sprayed synthetic foams.
For Sound Attenuation
Cellulose has good sound attenuation properties. If the project goal is noise reduction in an area in a building, and weather insulation properties are not a concern, the denser the application the better the attenuation.
